To feel like you’re on vacation you don’t always have to travel long distances. There’s an island off the coast of Cape Cod where you can disconnect from the world, enjoy some of the most decadent food, catch a beautiful sunset, and where a glass of chilled rosé is the first choice of libations. I discovered Nantucket 5 years ago, and we have been having a love affair ever since.
The charm of the cobblestone streets and gas lamps help you to realize that you are not on the main land anymore! The charm of this island has been so well preserved that it is hard to imagine anyone coming to this “slice of heaven” as I call it, and not wanting to return to visit year after year. My sister and I have turned this into an annual retreat. Now you might be saying to yourself, “don’t you guys spend enough time together?”. Living together, working together, being sisters first and friends second comes with challenges of course as it would for anyone, but our time spent on Nantucket is just for the two of us. We’ve even joked (maybe) that when we have kids we will put Micky Mouse ears on their heads, watch Disney movies, and when we step foot off the ferry onto this beautiful island say “Welcome to Disney!” This year we did a September trip, which I highly recommend.
The shot from the boat basin up to 76 Main where we take up temporary residence is just about a 5 minute walk. Don’t be fooled, its more like an obstacle course trying to get a suitcase up the busy cobblestone sidewalks, but it is well worth it. The hospitality we have always experienced at this home away from home is unparalleled. Between the small plate breakfasts, the warm cookies in the afternoon, to the evening fire pit and the cozy bathrobes we are always more than happy to be staying at a Lark Property. Year after year they remember the two sisters who come out to visit and it is always a joyful reunion.
After dragging our luggage up the hill we always head straight down to CRU to rehydrate with a glass of rosé and some oysters. The Lawler girls are all about good vibes and this place is packed with ambiance and good energy. This year we happened upon some familiar faces and made some new friends which is really what the purpose of disconnecting on vacation is all about! Along with CRU some of our favorite places to frequent are Nautilus, Brotherhood of Thieves, Station 21, Millie’s, the back bar at Ventuno, and our absolute favorite is Dune. Dune is the one place we have dined year after year and never been disappointed. The service is super friendly, the bartenders shake their cocktails with finesse, and the food always leaves you wishing there was one more bite (even though the portions are more than generous!).
Taking one day to explore the island with a Jeep is something we have decided is an absolute must! It gives you the opportunity to grab a sandwich at Something Natural (take it from me, a half a sandwich will do) and head over to Step’s Beach, explore out in ‘Sconset, head to Barlett Farms to check out some fresh local produce, and to drive out onto the beaches which with the right jam playing can be almost a spiritual experience. This year we had an extra day so we decided to check out a local fitness studio and had an awesome barre class at Studio Nantucket. Feeling the burn made us feel like it was money well spent and the studio is very well kept. Everyone was so friendly, and we didn’t feel so badly about indulging over the weekend after getting a great workout in. After class we kept our basic energy going and headed to The Lemonpress for some avocado toast.
The Cisco Brewery is such a fun spot with something for everyone. They have spirits, beer, and wine along with food trucks and live music. Nothing about that sounds awful right? Plus, its dog friendly! I’m always excited to see what they have for new gear, and the piece of swag I picked up this year is the most cozy Johnny Vacay shirt for Cisco. It has quickly turned into one of my favorites (pictured above). I’d be lying if I said I didn’t already have their koozies and hats to go along with it. You can ride your bike out to the brewery but they also have a quick shuttle service from town that runs frequently throughout the day.
This trip is something we look forward to all year long and taking in the beauty of this island is something that will never get old. Each year we hope to discover new places and faces that keep us excited about coming back.
Until next time, stay gangster.
